What kind of stuff does everybody here listen to? I like Dream Theater, Threshold, Sonata Arctica, Pain of Salvation...
Oh, and Steve Vai is quite possibly some kind of god.

Wow that's a very specific style of music you're into, and I really enjoy that stuff when I'm in the mood. I think I need a bit of variety though, I like all different sorts of music for different days and nights. Alot of the stuff I listen to is quite out of date now, like Bowie, Lennon, Queen etc. But in recent times I suppose I always prefer Greenday or U2. I love big anthem-like music, the sort that can really get you going. Although trippy electric music like Steve Vai, Dream Theater and Sonata Arctica are great for those pensive modes, when you want to contemplate on life or look back and assess the past. I won't call it 'relaxing music' as such, but it can definitely take a load off by putting things into perspective, or just force everything bunched up in your mind to escape out of your system. As I say though, my musical taste is very versatile.

Not sure where you got 'trippy electric' from. I've been to see DT in concert and they're one of the biggest bands in progressive metal. They cover a wide variety of styles; they're as old as I am, and they stick together through lineup changes, unlike many modern bands. The early stuff isn't a patch on the more recent stuff, though. Train of Thought is really heavy, but Awake is their best, and I defy anyone not to like it! Also, Threshold are the only British answer to DT and have a sound all their own. Definitely suggest a listen, especially to Subsurface and Clone, and Critical Mass. PS Vai's website, www.vai.com has a selection of videos under 'sights and sounds,' two of which are from Sex and Religion, in my dreams with you and down deep down into the pain, both of which are worth a look. But then I'm biased. I can't stand Green Day.

Hehe, yeah maybe 'trippy electric' is kind of misleading. Though I'd probably only substitute it with 'trippy metal', I just seem to get that surreal impression from some of that music, especially alot of Steve Vai's, although he has done a wide range of stuff. I'll take a look at that website. You know alot more about these guys than I do, so I won't question any of the DT info there. I haven't heard any Threshold as yet, but I'll keep an ear out. Shame about your Greenday aversion, you're missing out!
Is anyone into any classical or jazz? If so, what kind? It's great for those mellow moods or studying. Classical, I like: Liszt, Prokofiev, Gershwin, Stravinsky etc. and modern ones John Williams and Alan Silvestri. Jazz: Louis Armstrong, Sam Cooke, Dave Brubeck.

I like classical, but music isn't really my area...

Well, my aversion to Green Day is very much my own opinion. But to be honest, there are more bands I hate than bands I like.
Likewise, not into jazz.
Classical-wise, I like Vaughn Williams (mostly) and - though I'm afraid to sound boring - Beethoven. The fact that the people living above me have a piano - and occasionally play a bit of classical, occasionally Bob the Builder - has nothing to do with it.
